Over the last 10 years software has been a primary driver of change in vehicles and machines. The size and scope of software in vehicle systems increased 50 times between 2007 and 2014 and increased another 50 times between 2014 and 2019. This exponential increase shows how its influence dominates the landscape of vehicle evolution and its influence is still growing. Software is one of the key differentiators in how the latest vehicles perform versus their predecessors. Part of this development is due to that fact that software remains a much less mature technology than fluid power or motors.
In order to be able to adapt and implement new software into our, and our customer’s system, CrossControl has built our platform on the open Linux OS, customised to our devices, CC Linux, is designed to work in harmony with all CrossControl advanced devices. CC Linux is a cross platform distribution that offers identical API and application environments for both ARM and x86 devices. As we use a full OS that is supported by thousands of engineers it allows for the quick integration of existing applications into CrossControl hardware. Customers are not limited to a proprietary operating system and the need to recode applications in only one language but are supported in developing the solution they need by working with, not against, the resources and skills they already have.
The LinX Software Suite represents the next layer of the open CrossControl platform. Based on Linux and Qt it is a powerful development tool chain that can be used to achieve basic HMI and machine control functionality as well as advanced operational support features including telematics, wireless applications, video system, GPS positioning applications and the quick integration of smart devices. With the LinX Software Suite adopters have a complete platform for realising multifunctional equipment HMI and control systems without software limitations. Compared to other software platforms, LinX reduces engineering spend and time to market through intelligent design and powerful development tool chain. As it is deployed on all displays it includes tools for recreating applications across all display sizes, quickly and easily. Both CC Linux and the LinX Software Suite benefit from continuous development. Plus, there is a library of prebuilt modules for LinX that is constantly being expanded, so that machines can be updated with the latest software as it becomes available.
This open and modular approach to our system architecture allows for the integration of existing applications into the platform either those built for previous CrossControl solutions or created by 3rd parties. This gives OEMs and system integrators huge advantages in both flexibility and in reducing their engineering spend and time to market.
