The goal of National Engineers Week is to increase the understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers. We asked some of our seasoned engineers about the influences that drew them to the field, memorable career events and their greatest challenges.
As engineering director at CrossControl, Jesper Bergsjö, said he can’t remember a time he didn’t want to be an engineer. “I have always built things myself, like Legos, model aircrafts, windsurfing boards and even snowboards,” he said. “The biggest difference between me and my friends was that I always started by making a drawing. I’m also very interested in how things work and like to take things apart just to see how they are made.”
Bergsjö said his parents also were very influential in shaping his career decision. “Having a father who is an engineer and a mother who is a mathematics and physics teacher never gave me much of a choice,” he said. “Technical matters were always much easier for me than other subjects, and this led me to a technical high school and university studies within electrical engineering.”
Bergsjö enjoys the ability to combine his technical skills with the opportunity to work with different people. “The manageable size of the company makes it possible to act in the management team as well as engaging with the engineers on a technical level,” he said.
“My most memorable event within CrossControl was the early phases of designing the CCpilot VI,” he said. “I formed a true cross-functional team of experts, and we designed a concept, considering technical and production aspects, as well as industrial design. Since I was relatively new to CrossControl, this gave me the opportunity to gain a lot of product knowledge.”
Bergsjö said his biggest challenge within CrossControl is the current worldwide semiconductor crises, the worst he’s seen in his 30 years in the business. “The only way to approach it is to work in a cross-functional way, involving all disciplines from sourcing to sales,” he said. “We are thinking outside the box, supporting sales in customer communication and keeping upper management informed. While we are far from through this crisis, I have never seen a better attitude where all disciplines in the company do more than their best trying to solve issues.”
