The 17th IFIP TC.13 International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction, INTERACT 2019, was held from the 2nd to the 6th of September in Paphos, Cyprus. The conference provides an important platform for researchers and practitioners in the fields of HCI and HMI to showcase their work.
CrossControl’s Global UX lead Markus Wallmyr presented a paper as part of his research work with Mälardalen University detailing his work evaluating mixed reality notifications to support excavator operator awareness. The paper looked at how notifications can impact the efficiency and safety of the operator in control of excavators. Markus and the team at Mälardalen University also revealed the results of experiments carried out with a custom built rig that enabled them to compare the performance of test subjects. The test included subjects operating an excavator on a virtual course using a traditional head down display against two types of mixed reality interface.
Later in September Markus Wallmyr and his research colleague Taufik Sitompul led a workshop at AutmotiveUI 19 hosted by Utrecht University in the Netherlands. The conference was organised by the prestigious university and attracted researchers and professionals from across the automotive spectrum including luxury personal vehicles and specialised industrial vehicle OEMs. The workshop focused on a research agenda for UI in the next generation of industrial machines to improve safety and decrease the operator’s mental workload.
As part of his ongoing doctoral thesis Markus has been looking at the research into transparent displays and how they can be used in industrial vehicles. This work in necessary to gain insight into how new media like HUDs transparent OLED displays and projected displays could be used in the future to create new HMI solutions for operators as we work to make industrial machines, smarter safer and more productive.
