CC Linux and LinX Software Suite, CrossControl’s operating system and application framework are moving to a new synchronised release cycle. CC Linux 4.0 introduces a new update structure and new security features while LinX 5.2 brings the newest version of Qt and additional developer support.
As part of the update the team has worked hard to maintain the same libraries and API to ensure cross-version compatibility despite the revamped system structure which will facilitate new features. This means that customer software can run on both systems.
But it’s not all the same, CC Linux 4 brings a new configuration for package distribution. This allows for a significant security increase in two important areas. On device security is vastly improved with new tools for implementing restricted access so that legacy programs and 3rd party solutions can be run without compromising system security, and improved device chain security with a completely new update system. This structure ensures that updating is safe under any circumstances. And that devices in the field remain operational even in case the update fails for a power outage, network error or a storage failure. It also provides a secure framework so that the device shall remain under the control of OEM and unauthorized updates cannot be installed.
With this update customers can concentrate on continuing their application development and avoid having to migrate to new library versions (for example CCAPI is compatible with both versions). There are some workflow changes with new methods for updating or installing apps and libraries.
The LinX Software Suite release adds the brand new Qt 6.8 Long Term Support version. This brings native Ethernet camera support using Qt Mediaplayer and for commercial users it brings an additional 2 years of service (5 years instead of earlier versions which was 3 years).
The new Qt release can also support compliance with the coming CRA (Cyber Security Resilience Act) by providing an SBOM (Software Bill of Material) in SPDX v2.3 format.
Plus, the process of getting started gets even easier with updated and installable SDKs for the CrossControl display of your choice. Developers can choose between Debian packages or Docker images, and can develop, run, debug and test applications directly on the new and security reinforced displays with CC Linux 4. It also adds inherent support for Qbee and Hawkbit for cloud based device management and software over the air updates.
The new release also increases support for the development of web applications with HTML5, CSS, or JavaScript, using some of the modern web development frameworks including Node.js, React, Vue, ASP.Net Core, Python, Flask, Django.
As with the CC Linux release, the newest version of LinX supports creating applications and solutions for both CC Linux 3 and CC Linux 4 based displays.
