Object detection can be a powerful tool to improve safety and productivity in industrial vehicle applications. CrossControl has with it’s new line of display computers based on the iMX8 application processor made a recipe for implementing object detection in a lean way.
It is relatively straight forward to realize object detection based on a powerful PC platform and commercially available software frameworks. However, the cost for such a solution is considerable and for cost sensitive industrial vehicles it will be a barrier to wide market adoption.
CrossControl base their object detection concept on their new iMX8X-based displays in sizes 10.1” and 12”. The concept uses standard digital cameras available for industrial vehicle usage from several vendors and they communicate with the display computer through a 1 Gigabit Ethernet port.
The displays have inherent support for easy integration of AI accelerator boards, optimized for detection and classification of objects in high frame rate video streams. Also, the new displays come with a powerful graphics processing unit, offering 3 times higher graphics performance than earlier generations of ARM application processors. This enables smooth rendering of high-resolution camera streams and overlaying of the markers and classification that the AI board delivers.
With the combination of efficient video stream decoding, AI accelerated object detection and high graphics performance, CrossControl claim that responsive object detection applications can be realized in a lean way.
